Departmental Listing

This list was used for Teacher Pager Forwarding during the month of June, 1995. Such lists were compiled by Hal and Pat weekly and distributed to those assisting as "Teacher Pager Forwarders" (TPFs). At this time we only had one TPF at a time, using the "IESCD" screen name.

Mark Hulme, as head of the IES, was the only AOL manager at this time. Everyone else, including Hal, were volunteers.

The TPFs would receive the Pager, determine the most appropriate topic, then copy and paste the list of Responders to a new e-mail, CCing the student. The first teacher to answer used "reply to all" and maintained the subject heading so that all other Responders knew an answer had been sent. Responders who could provide additional information were encouraged to also reply.

Eventually the names of the Knowledge Database editor for that topic was also added so the responses could be archived in the KD.

Reminder:

The AAC discourages teachers doing research for the students,  but personal knowledge and experiences can be forwarded as can specific facts at the discretion of the teacher.  Examples may be included.  Each teacher may determine how much or how little assistance to provide.  Teachers are encouraged to be familiar with areas on AOL where facts may be found,  and to suggest such areas to the student.  Please be specific: "Use Comptons" is unacceptable,  but mentioning the article in Comptons is satisfactory.

Appreciation

It is to be remembered that Hal and Pat maintained this list weekly between 1993 and 1997 as volunteers, not AOL employees. During a typical week it took between one and six hours to make updates.

The Teacher Pager Forwarders assisted online more than 20 hours a week each. The flow of TPFs was coordinated by Pat who filled in when there were openings. Although the overnight hours were not always covered (2 to 6 AM ET), at other times it was rare than a Page sat undistributed for more than 10 minutes.

It was not unusual for a student to receive a reply within five minutes of posting a question. Less than 1% of the questions went unanswered.

The Deans, Chairs, and Area Experts would check all Pages and if a reply had not been received within 24 hours they would personally research the topic and contact the student.
